Major General Dr. Ehsan Mehmood Khan, Hilal-i-Imtiaz (Military), retired from the Pakistan Army in October 2025 after more than 37 years of distinguished commissioned service.
During his military career, he held several senior command, staff and institutional appointments, including Commander Force Command Northern Areas in Gilgit-Baltistan, Director General Infantry at General Headquarters, and Director General of the Institute for Strategic Studies, Research and Analysis at the National Defence University (NDU), Islamabad.
Major General Khan holds a Master's degree in Strategic Security Studies from the NDU, Washington D.C., an MPhil in Security Studies, and a PhD in Peace and Conflict Studies from NDU Islamabad. His doctoral research focused on human security. His book, Human Security in Pakistan, published in 2013, has been used as a reference and included in academic curricula at the NDU in Washington D.C., the NDU in Islamabad, and several other universities and professional institutions.
A strategic thinker, researcher and policy analyst, Major General Khan has published extensively in peer-reviewed scholarly journals, monographs and national newspapers. His areas of expertise include national security, military strategy, geopolitics and geography, hybrid warfare, peace and conflict studies, human security, research methodology, philosophy, and the strategic significance and development of Gilgit-Baltistan.
He remains actively engaged in professional military education and policy research as a visiting faculty member and speaker at several universities, think tanks and professional institutions, including the NDU Islamabad, China's National University of Defense Technology (NUDT), the PAF Air War College Institute (AWCI), Pakistan Navy War College (PNWC), National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the Gilgit-Baltistan National Security Workshop (NSW), and the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI). He also serves as Senior Strategic Adviser at SDPI.
In recognition of his distinguished and meritorious service, he was awarded the Hilal-i-Imtiaz (Military) in 2021.
Major General Khan's association with the GPS Forum adds value to its work on national security, military strategy, human security, peace and conflict studies, and policy-oriented strategic research.
